History of Charoite Stone

Found only in Russia, charoite is considered a rare stone. It takes its name from the Chara River, flowing through the Aldan massif, a group of reliefs with an average height of 800 to 1,000 m. The word "chary" means "charm" or "magic" in Russian. Discovered in 1947, this stone from the silicate group was only described and disseminated much later, in 1978. It can be found in the metasomatic rocks of the massif which are formed at an average temperature of 200 to 250 degrees. The colors of charoite stone come in several tones, from purple to lilac, including brown. The discovery of charoite is so recent that we do not yet have any specific information.

This stone is very attractive because of its pretty purple color. However, it remains rare given the limitation of its extraction, especially since the only area where it is located is in Eastern Siberia, in the Republic of Sakha. Access remains particularly difficult and considerably limits its exploitation. If the discovery of the stone dates back to the 1940s, it was not described and analyzed until around 1978. Its exploitation remains strongly limited, since it is located more precisely in one of the most hostile environments on Earth.
